Faceted Moldavite

Faceted Moldavite

Faceted moldavite is one of the most fascinating and unique gemstones. This Czech mineral is renowned for its beautiful green color and natural bubbles inside, making it not only beautiful but also easily recognizable. The process of faceting moldavite is an art skill that requires carefulness, patience, and dexterity, especially when done by hand.

How is moldavite faceted?

Faceting moldavite is a craft that requires skill and precision. Here is a general overview of this process:

  1. Selecting the raw material: The faceting begins with the selection of high-quality raw, unprocessed moldavite. It's important to choose a stone with the fewest possible internal flaws to ensure the final cut is as clear as possible.

  2. Slicing the stone: The raw moldavite is first cut into smaller pieces to better process it and to enhance interior visibility (through light).

  3. Grinding (coarse grinding): Initially, the stone is coarsely ground to remove rough irregularities and to form a rough shape.

  4. Shaping: After coarse grinding, the moldavite is shaped into the desired form and cut.

  5. Fine grinding: Subsequently, the stone is finely ground to achieve a smooth surface and precise shape.

  6. Polishing: Finally, the stone is polished, which enhances its color and brightness.

Shapes and types of cuts

Faceted moldavite can take various shapes and types of cuts according to the wishes or artistic intent of the cutter. It is important to distinguish shape from cut. Basic shapes of faceted stones include Round, Teardrop, Oval, Heart, Square, Rectangle, Octagon (both square and rectangular), and briolette. Here are some main cuts used for faceting moldavites:

  1. Cabochon

  2. Rose cut

  3. Brilliant

  4. Faceted cut

  5. Checkerboard

One of the most distinctive features of moldavite is its natural appearance. Inside the stone, bubbles and inclusions are visible, making each stone unique. Faceting moldavite is also challenging due to these bubbles, as some can be large and irregular, increasing the risk of cracking or damaging the stone.

Faceted moldavite not only enhances a beautiful piece of jewelry but is also a showcase of artistic craftsmanship and natural beauty. Hand faceting adds a unique charm and uniqueness to each stone. With its green hue and natural bubbles, moldavite is easily recognizable and valued worldwide.
