How Did Moldavite Form?

We may never know with absolute certainty how this global rarity originated, but there are several theories about the formation of moldavites that we will share with you.

The most probable and scientifically supported theory is that moldavite was created by the impact of a large meteorite on the territory of what is now Germany (the Ries crater).

About 15 million years ago, this meteorite struck the Earth. At high temperatures, millions of tons of meteorite, along with molten rock, were ejected to the region of today's Southern Bohemia. This is why moldavites are commonly found in shapes like drops, disks, and ovals, and no two pieces are ever the same. A great benefit of purchasing moldavite jewelry is that each piece is a unique one-of-a-kind.

Moldavites contain a number of small air bubbles, usually visible in polished stones. Interestingly, the pressure inside these bubbles is very low, proving that they were formed in an environment with very low pressure. Moldavites are also sought after for these bubbles, which many believe to hold cosmic energy.
